What types of woods are wooden pallets made of?

You will have to choose what type of wood you want your pallet to be made from. It sounds like an easy decision to make, but that can be hard with literally hundreds of types of wood available. For example, hardwood such as mahogany, maple, oak, teak, and walnut are commonly used in furniture. Compared to softwood which is usually found in more applications due to its adaptability.

The types of wood companies most commonly used will depend on the location of the world they reside in and which types of wood are more readily available in their area. You may be surprised the terms hardwood or softwood refer to the physical structure alone and not the woods’ robustness or durability. In fact, in most cases, pallets will have a mixture of hardwood and softwood.

How are wooden pallets made?

Once the type of material has been chosen, the pallets are trimmed to the relevant specifications required. This will ensure your pallets are made to measure. After they’ve been sized correctly, notches are cut to make it easier for forklifts to transport the pallets. Making them a perfect tool when transporting or storing goods.

Depending on what you require the pallets for, deciding to use a bespoke service can make a real difference. Wooden pallets are easy to assemble and manufacture. They have many uses which make them a very popular choice.

UK standard wooden pallet

UK Standard Sizes

The UK includes its own set of standard sizing. These sizes will vary depending on the pallet’s height, width, and length. They will also be affected by how much the pallet itself weighs and how much can be loaded.

You will need to be aware that some, but not all, of the UK standard sizes, will be acceptable in a number of European countries. For example, the standard UK pallet is generally accepted as 1000mm x 1200mm.

A pallet weighing 14kg would be able to take approximately 500kg of load, depending on what it is made of.

Euro Standard

The Euro standard sizing is the most widely used pallet in both Europe and the UK. These pallets’ size is commonly 1200mm x 800mm with a height of 150mm, although other sizes are available. The European Pallet Association (EPAL) regulates Euro pallet production very closely, so the pallets are also produced to standard specifications for different applications and industries.

Below is a quick breakdown of the common Euro pallet standards:

  • EUR, EUR 1 – 800 mm Ă— 1,200 mm Ă— 145 mm
  • EUR 2 – 1,200 mm Ă— 1,000 mm Ă— 144 mm
  • EUR 3 – 1,000 mm Ă— 1,200 mm Ă— 144 mm
  • EUR 6 – 800 mm Ă— 600 mm Ă— 144 mm

ISO Standard

The International Standards Organisation created its own set of standards originally to create a rationalised system. This has resulted in the standards sitting alongside the Euro Pallet dimensions. However, it is important to note ISO has defined six pallet measurements for sending goods between continents.

These measurements are as follows:

  • 800 Ă— 1200 mm for use in Europe
  • 1000 Ă— 1200 mm for use in Europe, Asia
  • 1067 Ă— 1067 mm for use in North America, Europe, Asia
  • 1100 Ă— 1100 mm for use in Asia
  • 1165 Ă— 1165 mm for use in Australia
  • 1219 Ă— 1016 mm for use in North America

What size you require will depend on what you want to transport and where it will travel. You’ll also need to keep in mind the forklift your warehouse will be using. As you’ll want to ensure they can transport the pallets efficiently.
