Depending on if the pallets are standard or bespoke can slightly change the process.
However, the most common process is that we’ll receive pallet cants, that we trim down and turn into boards. These boards are then sawn into the necessary sized deck boards and stringers for the pallet. Notches are then cut into the stringers to allow entry for forklifts or pallet jacks.
If required, heat treatment is applied prior to assembly. Lastly, the pieces will be put together either by pneumatic nailers or machines that can nail the pallets together at high volumes.

ISPM 15 is short for International Standard for Phytosanitary Measure 15. It is the 15th measure to protect humans, animals and plants from pests, disease and contamination.
The EU requires wooden pallets to be heat-treated to lower the risks of contamination. Should you be using wooden pallets in freight to and from Europe, you will need to have the pallets heat-treated.
A pallet that has undergone the treatment to ensure that it meets with standards set out by ISPM 15 international standards.
Heat-treatment is required for wood packaging that is required to be moved between the UK and EU. It also helps to protect the pallet from contamination and potential risks from pests.
To heat treat a wooden pallet, a specialist skill is required that is in accordance with specification guidelines. The wooden pallet will need to be heated till the minimum core temperature reaches 56 degrees celsius. This temperature should then be maintained for at least 30 minutes.
Though some countries do require a higher core temperature for the wooden pallets as some pests have been known to tolerate 56 degrees celsius. In this instance, pallets are managed by the National Plant Protection Organisation (NPPO) on a case-by-case basis.
Yes, heat-treated pallets are great for reusing to transport and ship goods globally. ISPM 15 will last the lifetime of the pallet. Therefore once they’ve been treated, the pallets won’t be required to be re-treated unless they go through repair or remanufacture work.
You will be able to tell if a pallet has been heat-treated as every wooden packaging that is heat treated is stamped with an internationally recognised mark to prove that it has been treated to the ISPM 15 standard.
Failure to comply with ISPM 15 standards can lead to severe fines. For example, there was a case in the US where a company was fined $100,000 for falsely using ISPM 15 stamps when they hadn’t put the pallets through the required treatment.
Yes, we have our own kiln that can hold up to approx. 900 pallets, which we use to ensure that the pallets are correctly heat-treated to meet ISPM 15 standards.
