Understanding The Implications Of ISPM 15

Read Post

If you’re new to the wooden pallet or shipping industry, understanding the implications of ISPM 15 can be challenging, but here at Associated Pallets, we’re able to break it down to its core fundamentals.

In a nutshell, ISPM 15 has to do with the heat treating requirements for wooden pallets when shipping out of the EU. Learn the details and full implications of ISPM 15 below, or purchase fully heat treated, ISPM 15 compliant wooden pallets on our website now by visiting here.

What Is ISPM 15

ISPM 15 stands for International Standards For Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. But what does that really mean? Simply put, phytosanitary measures are measures put in place to protect people, animals and plants from nasty pests, contaminants, and diseases. So ISPM 15 is the 15th measure put in place to protect against these sorts of things.

ISPM 15 guidelines have been put in place for use around the world. Most International Standards are set by the International Organisation for Standardisation, also known as the ISO. You can learn more about the ISO and our certification on our website.

The whole point of ISPM 15 is to help reduce pests and diseases spread around the world. As you can imagine, hundreds of thousands of wooden pallets are shipped and transported around the globe every day, so reducing the risk of contaminates within such products is integral to keeping countries safe. Within the ISPM 15 guidelines, there are three ways to eradicate potential pests or diseases from wooden pallets: heat treatment, kiln drying, or Methyl Bromide (MB) fumigation for wood packaging material. For all three of these treatments, there is a strict process that must be followed.

Why Heat Treatment?

Heat treatment is considered the best choice for ISPM 15 compliance as it is capable of removing a broad range of insects and pests without leaving any unwanted residue like chemical treatment can. This makes heat treated wooden pallets more suitable for food and pharmaceutical usage, leading to a larger range of applications and markets.

Additionally, another benefit of heat treatment is that it allows the wooden pallet to be safe for reuse, whether in industry or as part of a creative project. Plus, so long as the wooden pallet doesn’t undergo maintenance or repair, ISPM 15 heat treatment can last for the wooden pallet’s entire lifetime.

The requirements and implications of ISPM 15 heat treatment also mean that mould and bacteria growth can also be significantly reduced, leading to safer storage of wooden pallets. At Associated Pallets, we take the health and safety of our products seriously, and we make it easy for you to get all sorts of ISPM 15 compliant wooden pallets and pallet accessories with fast next day delivery.

All heat treated ISPM 15 wooden pallets need to be stamped so that they can be recognised worldwide. The stamp also has the benefit of allowing the wooden pallet and other packaging to be traced back to a country or chain of origin. Not only can this help to find the source of any outbreak, but it also provides increased transparency for consumers.

Protecting Our Environment

At Associated Pallets, we’re dedicated to our mission to help reduce unnecessary wooden pallet waste across the country. We always have an extensive range of ISPM 15 compliant, heat treated wooden pallets available on our website, ready for next day delivery to anywhere throughout the UK.

As part of our high quality control and intensive care for all our products, we are members of Timcon to ensure that we comply with the UK WPMMP-HT programme. As part of this programme, our heat treatment kiln undergoes inspections twice a year, so you can have total peace of mind when you purchase from us.

But that’s not all! Alongside our pledge to help provide fully compliant, safe, and quality wooden pallets, we also offer a collection and recycling service. Used wooden pallets can, in many cases, be refurbished and resold back into industry or creative use, so there’s no reason to let them end up in landfills. Whenever you purchase one of our used and recycled products, we’ll provide you with a sustainability certificate showcasing your pledge to help us with our eco-friendly mission.

We also include certificates for our heat treated wooden pallets, alongside our company registration and graphs showcasing the treatment process so that you can have full transparency.
