Your Guide To Choosing The Correct Pallet Sizes For UK and European Delivery

15 Oct 2018

It’s important that a business chooses the correct pallet sizes for UK and European delivery. There are several reasons why this is an important decision to make, goods are delivered every single day and each shipment needs to be handled in the best way for the type of shipment being delivered. Ensuring you choose the correct size for your shipment, can also help to prevent any additional charges occurring during transport.

pallet sizes

International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)

There are particular pallet sizes that are approved by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). Commonly used pallet sizes in both the UK and Europe are:

  • 1000mm x 1200mm
  • 1067mm x 1067mm
  • 800mm x 1200mm

The most commonly used pallet in UK and Europe is the Euro pallet, hence the name of the pallet. This pallet is used in small to large businesses and the pallet size is 800 x 1200 x 120mm. Although this type of pallet must be constructed in a certain way that ensures it abides by the regulations set by the European Pallet Association (EPAL).

Pallet Pool System

The Pallet Pool System involves a setup of pallet swapping throughout the UK and Europe. Couriers and freight forwarders usually work with pallets that are sourced from pallet pools.

Advantages of the Pallet Pool System are that shipping costs are more controlled for the countries involved in the pool system. However, a disadvantage of the Pallet Pool System is that the measurements of the Euro Pallet means they have to be shipped using a wider container due to not fitting within an ISO shipping container.

Pallet Requirements Exceeding Accepted Measurements

If you have found that your pallet has exceeded the accepted measurements, most couriers are still able to accommodate your shipment, although a charge may occur. This charge will differ depending on the freight forwarder or courier but can typically be one and a half times the price of the pallet with an added charge worked out based on how much you have exceeded.

Choosing the correct pallet sizes for UK and European delivery is important to maximising the efficiency of your business. If you aren’t sure as to which pallet is most suitable for your business then we have a guide to help you choose the right pallet.
