heat treated

For those looking to transport their goods between countries, wooden pallets have to be heat treated. This is part of the ISPM 15 standards, to ensure hygiene when it comes to shipping. The countries that require this standard includes many European Union countries as well as the United States, but the list always growing.

Due to the volume of wooden packaging being shipped, there is an internationally agreed check to make sure there are no bugs hiding within the timber. The International Phytosanitary Standard for Wood Packaging, otherwise known as ISPM15, requires that all wooden forms of packaging, including pallets, are heat-treated prior to shipping.

Why Are Wooden Pallets Heat Treated?

ISPM15, or the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, has been developed by the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) with the aim of cutting down pests in transportation. The pests are often associated with moving raw wood packing material, making the process important.

How Are They Heat Treated?

The process of heat treatment is incredibly thorough, requiring high skill levels. The timber needs to be debarked as it’s only the core that needs to be used. In order for it to be efficiently heat-treated, the temperature must reach at least 56°C. This has to be high enough to remove the moisture within the pallet, which would have caused rot to form in the pallet.

ISPM15 Marking

Once the wooden pallet has been efficiently heat treated, they are stamped with an identifiable mark. This is to ensure they comply with the standards of the ISPM15. With various standards of heat treatment, there are three possible markings:

  • HT – This is used on individual wood components. It’s made up of an agency trademark, facility number and HT, each of which must be legible when displayed. This doesn’t replace the IPCC mark, instead, it creates  a link between the raw product
  • IPCC – This can be found on boxes and pallets. It consists of the HHT mark as well as a country code and the treaty’s wheat symbol on it twice.
  • IMMC Dunnage – This is mostly found on wood packaging using in blocking and bracing. This mark includes all of the before, as well as bearing the work ‘DUN’, relating to dunnage.

Why Is Treating The Pallets Important?

The International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures is fundamental to reduce the potential for pests and infestations. It’s becoming increasingly more fundamental to heat treat pallets to prevent these pests from being transmitted across international borders and causing further issues.

As there is extra work that is required to comply with this regulation, it’s essential that the precautions are taking prior to the shipping. Without compliance, there could be delays in shipping, causing issues between customer and the manufacturer. Because the standard relates to packaging made from raw wood only, this implicates structures made from wood fastened together, like crates. As as result, warehouse owners must educate themselves on the regulation.
