Wooden pallets can be used for a whole host of different uses beyond their average storage and transportation uses. As they are made from evenly cut timber boards, wooden pallets are easy to dismantle. Their materials can be recycled, from repairing a shed to crafting wooden planters and walkways. Below, we’ve created a handy guide so you can craft your own wooden planters from pallets:
What You Will Need
To get started building your wooden planters from pallets, you’re going to need a few tools and materials, which we have listed below:
- – A collection of pallets, preferably of the same size, although they can easily be cut down to size.
- – A series of tools, including a saw and hammer.
- – A measuring tape.
- – Fresh soil and compost.
- – Your chosen plants.
- – Nails or glue.
- – Safety glasses and gloves.
Optional:
- – Sandpaper.
- – Paint & brushes.
- – Tape, a printer, and regular printer paper.
Step 1: Dismantling The Pallets
Safely dismantle your wooden pallets using a claw hammer to pry away the nails or a saw to separate the wooden boards into even sized pieces. Once they have been taken apart, measure the boards and cut them to the correct length you want your wooden planters to be.
Be sure to recycle any leftover pieces of scrap wood or save them for a future project!
Step 2: Combine The Boards
Place the boards together in a square or rectangular shape (depending on how long you cut them and your desired look) and begin nailing or glueing them together at the edges to create a sort of lidless, bottomless box. You can use more timber boards to increase the height of the walls of the box. If you’re in need of more wooden pallets for this step, check out our wide selection of pallets and pallet accessories on our website, including pallet collars and wrap.
Step 3: Finish Construction
Flip the wooden planter upside down and begin nailing or glueing boards to the base to create a bottom for your planter. Once the bottom has been securely fastened to the rest of the wooden planter, flip it the right side up, with the new wooden base touching the ground and the opening facing up at you.
Step 4 (Optional): Sanding & Painting
Now that the planter has been built, if you want a special end result, use sandpaper of varying grit to smooth out rough edges and corners. This step can help fix any mistakes made when cutting or dismantling the boards in step one. Afterwards, you can also choose your preferred colours and begin painting the wooden planter. If you’d like to save on paint, you may not need to paint the inside of the planter, as later, this will be filled with compost and soil.
Go wild painting whatever design or pattern you like! For more particular patterns, you can print stencils out online using a printer and paper and cut them out using scissors or a knife. Then you can temporarily stick the paper stencil to the wooden planter with tape and begin painting over it.
Be sure to leave the wooden planter to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Fill The Wooden Planter
Now that the wooden planter has been constructed (and possibly painted), it’s time to start filling it with fresh soil and compost! Be sure to spread the surface evenly for a nice and tidy aesthetic. Once it has been filled close to the brim, you can start making small holes to plant your flowers, seeds, or whatever else you wish to grow.
Step 6: Put In Place
Your wooden planter is complete! Be sure to place it somewhere that can help the plants grow healthy and strong. A patio or back garden makes a fantastic location, or you can even gift it to a friend or family member to help them brighten their own home.
