5 Frequently Asked Questions About Pallets

Stacked wooden pallets
If you are involved in moving goods, then you may be in need of wooden pallets or have to calculate loading metres. Terms like this are common in logistics and transport, so it is a good idea to know exactly what these things are so you can use these terms confidently and efficiently.

1. What is a pallet?

A pallet is a commonly used device for moving and protecting all kinds of goods. It is sometimes defined as a transport unit, being a platform for storage and transportation.

Pallets can be made of a number of materials, including wood, plastic or even cardboard. They can be made in an array of sizes and shapes, and pallets can also be designed specifically for particular goods.

Some pallets can be recycled, some are only used once, and some can go from warehouse to point-of-sale display.

2. What are the different benefits of different pallet materials?

When it comes to the benefits of different pallets, these are significantly affected by what they are made from. Wooden pallets are tough and solid and can stay outside.

As wood can harbour insects, it may need to be given heat treatment or fumigated with pesticides.

Pallets made from plastic are often used where hygiene is important, such as in transporting food or pharmaceuticals, and can be cleaned quite easily.

Cardboard is light and flexible and can be made of recycled materials. The low weight of cardboard makes it a good pallet choice for goods that will be freighted by air.

3. What is a Euro pallet?

You may be wondering what a Euro pallet is. The Euro pallet is used frequently in Europe and its standard size is 80cm x 120cm. It is 14.4cm high and can carry a load of up to 1,500kg.

Officially known as the EUR-pallet, a Euro pallet is made of wood, and its specifications are determined by EPAL – the European Pallet Association.

There are around 450 million Euro pallets being used in warehouses and transport facilities throughout Europe.

4. What is a block pallet?

The block pallet is another frequently used pallet, and its dimensions are usually 100cm x 120cm, with another variation being 110cm x110cm.

Block pallets are not officially sanctioned for European use, and in the UK block pallets that measure 100cm x 120cm are used. These pallets have upper, middle and lower sections and blocks to cover them.

The weight they can carry is determined by the thickness of these sections and blocks.

5. What are loading metres?

Loading metres are important, as they are units used for items that must not be stacked or have goods stacked on them. This makes up for lost volume in the transport vehicle.

One loading metre equals one linear metre of loading space within a truck. Loading metres can be calculated in a number of ways, but a frequently used method is to calculate the floor space occupied by the goods.

This is done by multiplying the length of the floor by the width and dividing it by 2.4 – as the width of the transport truck is 2.4m. Then you will have the number of loading metres.

When you need a quote for cardboard, plastic or wooden pallets, you just need to say how big the shipment of goods is, and then a reputable firm will do the rest.
